I would like to introduce our newest tutor, Lowri. Lowri is studying Primary Teaching and well as PDHPE and loves reading with kids.

Lowri is well organised, fun and passionate about helping kids to fulfil their potential.

Lowri is able to come to your home anywhere from Frenchs Forest to Maroubra.

At the moment, Lowri is available on Monday, Tuesday and Friday afternoons.

I am pleased to announce that Ignite Literacy has welcomed a new tutor, Debbie.

Debbie has trained as a high school teacher and specialises in teaching English as a Second Language. She has also learnt how to assess and assist students in literacy skills.

Debbie is encouraging, enthusiastic and works hard to ensure that her students achieve all that they can.

Debbie is able to come to your home to tutor your child. She is able to go to homes in from Vaucluse to Kensington and everywhere in between.

These are quotes from a parent and student of Ignite Literacy.

Mother, Bec:
“We approached De because our daughter was falling behind in school in reading, was suffering from a lack of confidence in her reading ability and was avoiding reading, because she felt she was ‘bad’ at it.  De has been tutoring our daughter for the last 2 months, and the improvement in her reading in that time has been incredible.  Not only has her reading ability significantly improved, but more importantly, her confidence has increased and she doesn’t hate reading any more! She really looks forward to De’s sessions, and she loves to do the homework De sets. I am delighted with the progress my daughter has made since we have had De as a tutor and would highly recommend her!”
Student:
“I really really like reading with De.  She is so kind and she makes me feel like I am good at reading.  And I really love that when I do well, she gets me something from Smiggle.  I feel better now at school because I’ve gone up 2 classes for reading, and I feel like I can read the same as my friends now”.

For some parents, this question hangs over their heads, with regards to their child’s progress at school. Sometimes, we wait for a better teacher, our child to mature or for things to work themselves out. When your child is struggling to learn to read, sometimes it’s hard to know when to take further action and when to sit and wait.

There are times when things will work themselves out, however, sometimes waiting can do more harm than good, as your child falls further behind.

A new year is a good time to give your child a boost with their reading skills. It is a time of new beginnings and optimism. Providing your child with 1 hour of literacy tutoring will give them a kickstart to the year, helping them to grow in their confidence as well as provide them with the skills required in their new class.

This will also give you peace of mind, knowing that you are taking action towards helping your child’s literacy progress. Call De today on 0414 684 837, for a FREE reading assessment. I will come to your home, assess your child’s literacy skills and provide a report about your child’s skills. If you then feel that this is not the right thing for you and your child, there is no pressure for you to continue with tutoring.

There is nothing to lose. Call me today to talk about your child’s reading.

Some children sit in class and feel overwhelmed and frustrated because the work is too hard for them. This leads to children believing that they cannot learn and even an unwillingness to try.

Do you recognise this in your child?

Is your child struggling to learn to read, write and spell?

How would you feel watching your child enjoy reading?

Have you considered 1:1 literacy tutoring in your own home?

Ignite Literacy offers tutoring for children in Years K-6 in the Eastern Suburbs and Inner West of Sydney

Your Child Will:

1.  Develop skills quickly from a personalised program

2.  Grow more confident in their abilities

3.  No longer be left behind

You will watch as your child’s confidence grows as they achieve success in mastering skills at their own level. Ignite Literacy’s personalised program means that your child will work on the skills where they require the most assistance, at their own level.

When working with your child, we will bury the “I can’t” attitude!

Your child will be assessed in their reading, writing and spelling abilities in the first lesson. Reading will be assessed through reading an unseen text, recognition of sight words, their response to comprehension questions as well as sound recognition. These assessments will help to tailor a reading program to your child.

A typical lesson would include reading a text at your child’s level, learning new sight words and learning new sounds. A reading lesson would also include a writing and spelling component. I will leave books, flash cards and activities for you to do with your child throughout the week.

All of the resources for your child’s tutoring will be specifically for their level. I believe that work should be challenging without being too difficult and frustrating. Your child will meet a high level of success in moving through the levels of reading and spelling. This will help your child’s confidence to grow. Further, I do place an emphasis upon building children’s self-efficacy (their belief in their own abilities).

Just arrived!

A new series of books designed for students aged 9-14 years, who have difficulty reading. After searching for many years, I have found a series of books written in Australia just for this group of kids.

Fast Forward has been developed for students in the middle years who are experiencing difficulty with literacy. These students may be from non-English speaking backgrounds, experiencing learning difficulties, disengaged or simply require further reading practice. Whatever the reason,Fast Forward aims to engage and increase reading ability and confidence by appealing to the student’s interest level and reading level.

This long awaited for series is a great tool for students who have disengaged from reading.
